This is going to be fun.

We all know that Updowntowners are a special breed – willing to learn (surprising useful) tasks like how to construct a sink on a Downtown street or craft a 15-foot float from stuff you found at Home Depot. I’ve even become a licensed Food Manager, even though I have no desire to ever work in food service. Ever. I’m reminded of this special credential of mine every time I visit a sushi restaurant and wonder if that fish really WAS kept below 41 degrees.

I’m always amazed at the skills that are needed to “make something out of nothing” in Updowntowners-land and that’s why I’m starting a list.

You know you’re an Updowntowner when…

1.) You know the exact color code for “reindeer paint.”

2.) You begin listening to Christmas songs just after Labor Day.

3.) You know just how much confusion the phrase “Shut the front door” can cause.

4.) You have a working knowledge of different kinds of event fencing and loathe the color orange.

5.) You know what RFPs, Kwik-covers, riders, petal paper, destaging, and float convoys are.

6.) You know the Star City Holiday Parade jingle by heart.

7.) You check weather.com an embarrassing number of times in mid-June and early December.

8.) You think you’re driving a 1978 El Camino leisurely down the street. However, you’re ACTUALLY driving a giant purple drum and people are staring and pointing.

9.) You have a knack for finding “Updowntowner blue” amongst a lineup of blues.

10.) You’re one of the lucky few to have an “Official Parade Vehicle” sign for your car.

Many of you with a longer tenure with Updowntowners (I’m looking at you Tad) have already had two or three things pop into your mind, I’m sure. And associated with those things are either feelings of accomplishment, camaraderie and joy, or you’re just wondering how you were ever convinced it would be a good idea. Either way, Updowntowners have some great stories and I’d like to hear yours.

Cheers,

Frances
